I'm thinking about doing the Orphan Foundation of America Red Scarf Project . The scarves go to college-bound kids from the foster system. They even provide a number of unisex patterns in knit and crochet.

Scarves don't take much time to work up at all and I love the idea of it. There's a local knitting shop in NoVa - In Stitches that will serve as a collection point. Here's a blurb from their latest newsletter:

I am proud to announce In Stitches will once again serve as a collection point for the Red Scarf Project.  The Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) launched the Red Scarf Project several years ago to provide hand-made knitted or crocheted scarves to college-bound foster youth.  Many of these young people have never had someone to give them a hand-made gift before.   

We will accept your knitted or crocheted scarf donations through Wednesday, December 10, and then ship them on to OFA. The web site has more information about the project and a list of resources as well if you need an idea or a little inspiration to get started on your scarf.
