Here are some resolutions that you are more likely to keep in the new year.
It is time again to make New Year's resolutions. Although losing weight and eating healthier are common resolution staples, the truth is that many people do not keep these difficult-to-maintain promises. Here is a list of recommended resolutions that are more likely to stick throughout 2011.
10.) Stop texting while driving – There have been countless accidents and fatalities caused by people texting and making calls while on the road. Stay safe and pull over before answering your phone, because the life you save might not just be your own.
9.) Get more sleep – Sleep is one thing that is frequently put on the backburner in today's busy society—but resist the temptation. Your demeanor and productivity level will improve when you are well-rested, and it will make life more pleasant.
8.) Compliment people – Giving a compliment goes a long way. Find something good in the people you encounter, and let them know about it. It will make their day.
7.) Limit your spending – Always ask yourself "Do I really need this?" before purchasing an item. Resist impulse buys. When possible, buy used, especially books and movies. You can save countless amounts of money, and increase your savings.
6.) Donate blood – Help out area hospitals and other organizations by donating your blood to the Inova Blood Donor Services. Check out Inova's future community blood drives to find the closest one to you. Inova will be at the Chinn Park Regional Library 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Jan. 15, so please stop by and give blood.
5.) Stay in touch with friends and family – Social media websites like Facebook have made it easy to keep in touch – but do you really keep in touch? Sometimes a good old fashioned phone call will do wonders.
4.) End your road rage – It is easy to yell, and get mad, at another motorist after they cut you off on Interstate 95, but resist the urge. Keeping calm when faced with unfortunate situations while driving can help reduce accidents and crimes, as well as improve your own health.
3.) Donate unwanted clothes to charity – Help keep someone warm this winter by donating coats and other clothing. Do this now, and you will be ahead of the game when spring comes, since your closets will already be clean and organized. The Salvation Army Family Store in Woodbridge is a great place to bring these much-needed items. You can also get a tax deduction for giving.
2.) Do one good deed a day – Do something that makes another person feel good, such as opening doors or carrying an elderly neighbor's groceries. Take the initiative and lend a helping hand. Follow the Golden Rule.
1.) Make yourself happy – Many people, especially busy parents, often forget about tending to themselves in their day-to-day life. Do something you love every day, something just for you. It is not a selfish act, and your life will benefit from setting some time aside for yourself.
