Long before computers existed, my grandfather used to say, "Never put anything in writing if you wouldn't want to see it on the front page of the New York Times." A good rule even then, and an even more important one now that one's writing has a chance of being as public as if it were on the front page of the New York Times.

I have several different online identities (Free of WHIP, of course, being one of them). The only ones associated with my name are my Facebook account (the vast majority of which is friends-only) and my professional website. And even then, I worry a bit about my comments on friends' public posts. It's a tough balance between being a hermit and being overly exposed.
