So the issue with the hot water heater isn't the hot water heater ... it is apparently an electrical issue. *le sigh* Of course, I didn't get this diagnosis from the plumber until almost 4pm, so it was too late to get someone out here today.

Another night and morning with no hot water ~brrrrr~.

Interesting. Is it the thermostat in the heater? Are the breakers tripped perhaps (check the breaker box)

Gee, you would think that any plumber would be able to fix a thermostat or switch or something in a water heater. That doesn't take any special electrical skills.

Maybe something with the circuit. But what? It's a hunk of 3-strand wire and breaker. What's to break down?

This is a side reason that I have a gym membership. Things go wrong I have plumbing available in a familiar place.

The plumber basically put a volt meter on the water heater .. and instead of it getting the 240 volts it needs .. it was barely getting 80. So, need the man who won't get electrocuted.

Very odd, my guess is a loose connection at the breakers. That would cause something like this, would also cause a fire if the wiring was not done right.

I wonder if your house has Al wires. Electrician time; I stay away from Aluminum wire issues.

checked the breakers first thing this morning. Whatever the issue is, it's from the box to the heater. Hence the need for the electrician.

So I'm really curious: What did it turn out to be?

A circuit breaker gone bad. Both the plumber and the electrician said it doesn't happen very often, but it does occasionally happen. Cost me $60 with part and labor.

Way better than having to replace the hot water heater all together, which of course had been my worst case scenario.

Hm. That is weird. Kinda spooky that the safety device failed, but glad it's all back in service.

I'm going to have to replace our tank soon enough. It's about 11 years old now and just living on borrowed time.

I've had pretty good luck heating water on the stove for a bath when we've run out of hot water. Might do to get the kids washed up anyway.

I'm sorry to hear about the water heater, but I wanted to say that I LOVE the icon. It's all about my life right now. Too bad I have no space left in my Icons...
