My closet is empty ....
Mar. 11th, 2004 01:42 pmokay, it's not *really* empty ... it has clothes in it ... a lot of which I'm holding onto for the wrong reasons, and because having a truly empty closet would just be depressing....
My day to day wardrobe consists of jeans (in black, denim, yellow, purple or stonewash) and shirts. I have few skirts and dresses but not many, and nothing currently fashionable. In the summer, my day to day changes to shorts (denim or khaki) or capri's (beige, blue, red or black) and a shirt.
It's pathetic. Somewhere in the last few years I have managed to forget how to dress.
Other than fetish dressing -- which I have a few good things, and the rest of my inspiration and stuff I seem to borrow from
syrenspellbound, I don't have any good clothes. Not *one* good pair of slacks ... hell, I don't even own a good pair of Dockers for chrissakes.... My sweaters have seen better days, and so have my turtlenecks. If I had to go to a "business
casual" anything I would be SOL.
I look at fashion magazines with a vague sense of longing. I would love to have a "style". I admire women like Audrey
Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Diane Keaton because they found something and made it work for them.
Women in menswear ... Diane Keaton (current), Marlene Dietrich (in a tux, past) ... I love looking at european women,
they really do have that certain je nest c'et quoi.
Of course one of the reasons I don't have new stuff, is I have that financial block of spending on myself when there is so much else here that needs money ... the kids, the house, put it into savings.... but the other reason, I wouldn't have a clue what to get *now . I'm too old to want to walk around trying to look like Brittany Spears ... and I don't have the body for the clingy-er fashions that other women my age can get away with... Other than my great taste in shoes (and I love shoes) I'm bereft of clue for clothes anymore. I don't have a good feel for my shape ( still looks pretty hourglass to me) or what would be most flattering. And eeee-ghad's I dread looking *frumpy* -- I am far too young to dress like my mother....
I live 10 minutes from Potomac Mills ... but do I clothes shop there? Nope, I go to IKEA and occasionally Bath & Body Works. I could keep putting it off forever -- losing weight is a great excuse. But, I've gotta do something ...sometime....or maybe I'm just doomed to mediocrity ... and looking like a college student for the rest of my life *sigh*.
4:30pm edit ...
I just ordered a new dress ... looks pretty, hope it doesn' come down to my ankles
