I sing to my daughters when I wake them up in the morning ... and I would like a selection of songs involving the morning to add to my repetoire.
What songs would you suggest?

These are the ones I sing on a rotating basis ....

Good Day Sunshine (Beatles) {I think}
Oklahoma (There's a bright golden haze on the meadow)
The Birdie Song (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wilfulcait)

Suggestions, with lyrics, would be appreciated! muchos gracias

From the Hair soundtrack: Good Morning Starshine

Good morning starshine, the earth says hello
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below

Good morning starshine, you lead us along
My love and me as we sing
Our early morning singing song

Giddy glup gloopy nibby nabby noopy la la la lo lo
Sabba sibby sabba nooby abba nabba le le le lo
Tooby ooby walla nooby abba nabba
Early morning singing song

Good morning starshine
There's love in your skies
Reflecting the sunlight
In my lover's eyes

Good morning starshine
My love and me as we sing
Our early morning singing song

Giddy glup gloopy nibby nabby noopy la la la lo lo
Sabba sibby sabba nooby abba nabba le le lo lo
Tooby ooby walla nooby abba nabba
Early morning singing song

Good morning starshine
The universe rings
With milky way music
Our blue planet sings
Good morning starshine
And someday so strong
They'll hear the song we sang
Our early morning singing song

Can you hear me
Singing a song, humming a song, singing a song
Loving a song, laughing a song, singing the song
Sing the song, song the sing
Song song song sing sing sing sing song

Good Morning to You

Good Morning, good morning to you.
We're all in our places
With sunshiny faces,
and this is the way
to start a new day!

Good morning to you
Good morning to you
Our day is beginning
There's so much to do
So good morning, good morning,
Good morning to you!

Hey you took mine! except that Dad's version was only one verse and it ended with "we'll sing and we'll play and we'll have a good day"

Mine too! But not only is mine one verse, it has "bright shiny faces". That's one of the two I regularly sing to wake my kids up.

The other is a camp song, complete with gestures and tickling of the child in question:

I woke up in the morning / I looked across the hall / The skeeters and the bedbugs / Were havin' a game of ball.
The score was nineteen-twenty / The bedbugs were ahead / The skeeters hit a home run / And knocked me out of bed!

I'm singin' eeny meeny and a / miney moe / Catch a whiffer-whoffer by the toe / And if he hollers, hollers, hollers / Let him go... / We're singing eeny, meeny and a / miney moe!

Well, the first suggestion that came to my mind would be more appropriate for you to sing to [livejournal.com profile] lapsedagnostic, which was the song they played every morning at 6 a.m. on WMMR in Philly, way back in the day: Sit on My Face, and Tell Me that You Love Me.

However, in regard to the children, um ... how about

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Hiding behind a tree
These little children are asking you
To please come out so we can play with you.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on,
please shine down on,
Please shine down on me.

And one of my faves, Morning has Broken, by Cat Stevens:

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day

Date: 2006-11-15 04:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bridgeoutahead.livejournal.com
just so we're all clear, Cat didn't write it. It's an old church hymn. He did create a new musical composition for the tune, though, that's quite different from the original hymn :)

I thought the original was a poem, not a hymn, but all the same, I was thinking of Cat Steven's voice in my head when I was typing it up.

Lazybones

From: [identity profile] musicman.livejournal.com
My mother used to sing this song to me when I was young, to get me out of bed. Sometimes I'd lay there even longer just to listen to her sing. There are many fine versions, including Louis Armstrong, and more recently, Harry Connick, Jr.

Lazybones
Louis Armstrong

Lazybones, sleepin' in the sun
how you spect to get your day's work done?
You can't get your day's work done
sleepin' in the noon day sun

Lazybones, layin' in the shade
how you gonna get your cornmeal made?
You can't get no cornmeal made
sleepin' in that evening shade

When taters need sprayin',
I bet you keep prayin'
The bugs'll fall off of the vine
And when you go fishin'
I bet you keep wishin'
Them fish don't grab your line

Lazybones, loafin' all the day
how you spect to make a dime that way?
You won't make no dime that way,
loafin' in the shade all day

Don't know if you want to use it, but my father used to sing this too us when we were lollygagging in bed a little too long:

Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning!
Oh, how I'd love to remain in bed!
But the worst blow of all is to hear the bugler call:
"You gotta get up,
You gotta get up,
You gotta get up this morning!"

My sister's and my sleepy response was:

Someday, I'm gonna murder the bugler!
Someday, they're gonna find him dead!
I will amputate his Reverie and stamp upon it heavily
And spend the rest of my life in bed!

It's an Irving Berlin tune. You can find more here: http://www.lyricsdownload.com/irving-berlin-oh-how-i-hate-to-get-up-in-the-morning-lyrics.html

Enjoy!

Louis Armstrong- What A Wonderful World (as sung by Iz)

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see em bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue, clouds of white
The bright blessed days, and dark sacred nights
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
Are so pretty in the sky
Its also on the faces
Of people goin by
I see friends shakin hands
Sayin, how do you do?
Fairies sayin, I love you.

I hear babies cry, and I watch em grow
Theyll learn much more than Ill ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
I think to myself, what a wonderful world

That's lovely... we sang a lot when I was growing up, and it's one of my happiest memories (my father's method of waking us up involved sitting on our feet). How about this one? It's just called "Good Morning" and Judy Garland sang it in the movie "Babes in Arms"

Good mornin', good mornin'!
We've danced the whole night through,
good mornin', good mornin' to you.

Good mornin', good mornin'!
It's great to stay up late,
good mornin', good mornin' to you.

When the band began to play
the sun was shinin' bright.
Now the milkman's on his way,
it's too late to say goodnight.

So, good mornin', good mornin'!
Sunbeams will soon smile through,
good mornin', my darlin', to you.

Here we are together,
a couple of stand-uppers.
Our day is done, breakfast time
starts with our supper.

Here we are together,
ah, but the best of friends must party.
So let me sing this party song
from the bottom of my hearty.

Good morning, it's a lovely morning.
Good morning, what a wonderful day.
We danced the whole night through.
Good morning, good morning to you.

I said good morning, see the sun is shinin'.
Good morning, hear the birdies sing.
It's great to stay up late.
Good mornin', good mornin' to you.

When the band began to play
the stars were shinin' bright.
Now the milkman's on his way,
it's too late to say goodnight.

Good morning, good morning!
Sunbeams will soon smile through.
Good mornin', good morning',
Good mornin', my darlin', to you!

I echo the "Good morning Starshine"

Also:
Teenagers, kick our butts - Darr Williams
mr Mistoffeleeslyrics (Cats)
Rhymes and Reasons (John Denver, though I preffer Irish Rovers version)
Rennaisance Faire by Blackmore's Night (on Faire days, natch)
Greensleeves (Blackmore's Night version, which actually makes it upbeat)
I'm under yours pell Buffy: The Musical - The song Tara sings to Willow

Pop goes the world Men without hats

Closer to the Heart - Rush

Affirmation - Savage Garden

Oh, and this one

There's nothing particularly morning-y about this song, but it's upbeat and fun and I often play it when I'm getting moving on a Saturday. It's a Fats Waller song:

Lulu's Back In Town

Gotta get my old tuxedo pressed, gotta sew a button on my vest,
'cause tonight I've gotta look my best, Lulu's back in town.

Gotta get a half a buck somewhere, gotta shine my shoes and slick my hair,
gotta get myself a boutonniere, Lulu's back in town.

You can tell all my pets, all my Harlem coquettes,
Mister Otis regrets, that he won't be aroun'.

You can tell the mailman not to call, I ain't comin' home until the fall
and then again I might not get home at all... Lulu's back in town.

Darn

Walking on Sunshine
I used to think maybe you love me, now baby I'm sure
and I just cant wait till the day, when you knock on my door
now every time I go for the mail box, gotta hold myself down
'cos I just cant wait till you write me, you're coming around

[Chorus:]

I'm walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I'm walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I'm walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
And don't it feel good
And don't it feel good

I used to think maybe you love me, I know that it's true
I don't want spend my whole life just waiting for you
I don't want you back for the weekend, not back for a day
baby I just want you back and I want you to stay

[Chorus]

I feel alive, I feel a love, I feel a love that's real
I feel alive, I feel a love, I feel a love that's real

[Chorus till end]

You are my Sunshine,
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away

Good Morning Starshine
Good morning starshine, the earth says hello

Well I don't have any kids, and I think I tend to scare them, but I do knwo some songs.

There's a band from Mpls./St. Paul called "Metamora"and they have a song called "Little Potato" which is not exactly a morning song, but it should be included in any kids repetoire

http://www.sugarhillrecords.com/catalog/pagemaker.cgi?1131

Trust me, when you hear it , you'll understand.

Also, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie have both done a lot of children's songs. Definitely worth looking into.

Mr Blue Sky
by E.L.O. (Electric Light Orchestra)
from the album Out of the Blue

Sun is shining in the sky, There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' Everybody's in a play
And don't you know, It's a beautiful new day.

Runnin' down the avenue See how the street shines brightly
In the city on the streets Where once was pity,
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today.

chorus: Mr. Blue sky, please tell us why, You had to hide away
For so long where did we go wrong.

Hey there Mr. Blue, We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do, Everybody smiles at you

Hey you with the pretty face Welcome to the human race
A celebration Mr. Blue Sky's Up there waitin'
and today Is the day we've waited for

chorus: Mr. Blue sky, please tell us why, You had to hide away
For so long where did we go wrong.

Mr. Blue you did it right But here comes Mr. Night,
Creepin' over, now his Hand is on your shoulder,
Never mind I'll remember you this way

chorus: Mr. Blue sky, please tell us why, You had to hide away
For so long where did we go wrong.

Hmmm, ya know, for some reason GBS is coming to mind. "Going Up" and "When I'm Up" in particular. Neither of which are about sunshine, but judging from the other posts, you have enough songs about sunshine to get you through another few girlies yet to come if need be.

You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
That's Why I'll Always Stay Around
You Are The Apple Of My Eye
Forever You'll Stay In My Heart

I Feel Like This Is The Beginning
Though I've Loved You For A Million Years
And If I Thought Our Love Was Ending
I'd Find Myself Drowning In My Own Tears

(whoa oah oo oowooah whoah ohh oh)

You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
That's Why I'll Always Stay Around
You Are The Apple Of My Eye
Forever You'll Stay In My Heart

You Must Have Known That I Was Lonely
Because You Came To My Rescue
And I Know That This Must Be Heaven
How Could So Much Love Be Inside Of You

repeat

I always think of this song from that episode of Taxi, when Jim's dad dies. Jim always thought his dad hated him. But he left him a cassette tape. And this was the song on it.

I guess you already know my favorite, sung to both of them, Ariel's song from the Little Mermaid, Part of Your World
We also sing the lullabye song from Lady and the Tramp:
I am your mother
And I'm so glad you're here
You have a father
Who loves you, oh so dear
We call you baby
'Cause we don't know how to say
That you are love
That's come to live
At our house today

La, la, loo
La, la, loo
Oh my little star sweeper
I'll sweep the stardust for you

La, la, loo
La, la, loo
Little soft, fluffy sleeper
Here comes a pink cloud for you

La, la, loo
La, la, loo
Little wandering angel
Fold up your wings
Close your eyes

La, la, loo
La, la, loo
And may love be your keeper

La, la, loo
La, la, loo
La, la, loo

Sailor shanties are good too, as long as they're fit for a G rated audience, this one changed to "heck" of course, as taught to me by a handsome sailor:

My father was the keeper of the Eddystone light
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night
Out of this union there came three
A porpoise and a porgy and the other was me!

Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for the life on the rolling sea!

One night, as I was a-trimming the glim
Singing a verse from the evening hymn
I head a voice cry out an "Ahoy!"
And there was my mother, sitting on a buoy.

"Oh, what has become of my children three?"
My mother then inquired of me.
One's on exhibit as a talking fish
The other was served in a chafing dish.

Then the phosphorus flashed in her seaweed hair.
I looked again, and my mother wasn't there
But her voice came angrily out of the night
"To Hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!"

Try this one. A little off the beaten path.

The Morning Side
(Winwood/Jennings)
Steve Winwood

You meet every kind of person moving toward the morning side
You see the good and the bad, the eyes are sad
You play every midnight gambler before you see the light
On the morning side, the morning side

You feel every heat and passion moving towards the morning side
To earn one more second chance, you learn the dance
When you finally climb the mountain, you see the other side
It's the morning side, the morning side

Now my life has changed and now my eyes can see
Now I'm living on the morning side
Now I'm letting all the sunlight into me
Now I'm free

And I know I'll never pass that way again
That dark journey to the morning side
On the morning side I feel my life begin
Let's begin
